Year 4 Synagogue Trip 30th Sept

Shalom! Year 4 spent the morning on Wednesday, travelling in glorious sunshine to the Mosaic Reform Synagogue in Harrow-on-the-Hill.  We found out about what makes a synagogue a place of worship rather than just a building and were fascinated by the size and splendour of the Torah scrolls.  We had the chance to sing some songs and brush up on our Hebrew at the same time. A particular treat was being able to go outside to the succah (as the festival of Succot is currently being celebrated) and to find out what it must have been like for the Israelites as they travelled through the desert without a proper home. In the succah, we also experienced the Friday night ritual of Shabbat as a welcoming of the Sabbath day of rest. Whilst we lit candles and heard the prayers, the grape juice, challah bread and cake were gratefully received by all! The children acted impeccably all morning and the leaders of the synagogue commented on how lucky we were to have such a lovely, responsive group of children. A good time was had by all.
